Yaz is a contraceptive that prevents ovulation and can produce changes in the cervical and uterine lining.  This makes it harder for the uterus to be reached by sperm and also harder for the uterus to accept a fertilized egg. Yaz is also used in treating acne in females of fourteen or older who are menstruating and want to protect them from unwanted pregnancy.

The generic name for Yaz is drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol.  Yaz is also used to treat premenstrual dysphonic disorder (PMDD) which has symptoms of depression, anxiety, trouble concentrating, irritability, changes in appetite or sleep patterns, breast tenderness, headaches, weight gain, lack of energy, and muscle or joint pain.

Yaz Side Effects

Side effects occurring in more that one percent of women who have used Yaz include:

Although not normal, some serious side effects of Yaz may include:

Yaz in Birth Control

Yaz uses two ingredients in birth control.  Yaz uses ethinyl estradiol, which is used by most oral contraceptive manufacturers.  Yaz also uses drospirenone, which is a progestin that no other birth control pill manufacturer uses.

Yaz Generic

Yaz has a generic substitute made by Teva Pharmaceuticals.  The active ingredient is called Gianvi, but it is the same basically as the ingredients in Yaz.  Bayer has filed a lawsuit against Teva because the patent is good until 2014.

It is not certain at this time if Yaz and Bayer will win the suit.  The makers of Yaz had an agreement with Barr Pharmaceuticals allowing them to market a generic Yaz no later than 2011.  Teva bought Barr and decided to use the option to make the generic Yaz.

Yaz Reviews

Women who have reviewed Yaz vary on their beliefs of the merits of the contraceptive.  Some have used Yaz more for the acne control than as a contraceptive.  These reviews have been impressive.

Some women were prescribed Yaz for PMS or PMDD problems that they were experiencing.  Many had a marked improvement in mood swings and depression after they switched from their former birth control to Yaz.

How does Yaz take effect
